GBCA News for August - September 2017

By Kelley Dees

Another great Texas Race Week was enjoyed in mid-July!

Thanks for all the racers who sailed, the friends who partied for three nights, and thanks to the Race Committee, and Walter and Beverly Caldwell for their planning and execution of the Event. Galveston will long remember GBCA and we look forward to returning!

Winners

  • First place winner in the PHRF Spin Class was J. D. Hill on Second Star.
  • First in PHRF Non-Spin was Roy Olsen on Danelaw.
  • GBCA Cruising Class first place winner was Bob Hunkins on Leopard.

Congratulations to all the winners!

GBCA is pleased to welcome our newest members, Armand Barbe, Chris Brown, Mark Carroll, Kelly Dotson, Ben Dotson, and Thomas Sellers. We appreciate you and look forward to getting to know you better!

August Races

Rum Race Series

One of the best ways to get acquainted with other sailors, or to spend time with your old sailing friends is to come out for the Rum Race Series. Rum Race #6 is August 12 and Rum Race #7 is set for August 26.

On the morning of Rum Race #7, on the 26th, please make plans to join us at the Clubhouse for our last Seminar of the summer, Racing Rules of Sailing and Tactics, led by Jack Yoes.

The seminar will be from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please bring your own copy of the Racing Rules of Sailing 2017-2020. Jack is well qualified to lead this class – he is on the Performance Handicap Racing Formula Galveston Bay, Executive Committee, 5 yr. Chair. He’s also a U. S. Sailing Certified National Race Officer, a Certified Race Management Instructor, a Certified Club Judge, a Certified Keelboat Instructor, Member of the Council for Sailors with Disabilities, and a frequent National Sailing Programs Symposium Presenter. Jack is also a member of the Flying Scott Sailing Association, an Admiral in the Texas Navy Association, Sr. Member of Houston Yacht Club and has held many positions there.

Please register on the GBCA website, so we’ll know how many to expect.

Single & Double Hand Regatta

Our other planned event for August is the very popular Single Hand Regatta on August 19, followed by the Mixed Doubles Regatta, aka “Divorce Cup”.

Please see registration and all the details on our website, www.gbca.org

September Races

September events include Rum Race #8 on the 9th, and the GBCA Women’s Regatta on September 16.

We look forward to seeing you at some or all of these – and don’t forget to join us at the Clubhouse in the Watergate Yachting Center after each race for Awards, Rum, and Parties!

Since 1947, GBCA has been the place to race on Galveston Bay. See you soon!
